hurricane Jeanne 9/24/2004

Hurricane Jeanne Morning After Blog
It's 7:04 am, and we awakened to stormy sky's. Last we spoke to friends in Vero, Randy (hubby) said he kept seeing blue fireworks in the sky. It was all the exploding transformers around Vero Beach. We have yet to speak to them.. But we're ok. No ocean came gushing down the street. Everyone was pretty much going up to the beach to take inventory. Our last inventory was at 11pm lastnight, and we saw, high tide, and Broadwalk covered in seaweed and ocean debri. We will go up there shortly to take inventory, as high tide is at 8am this morning.Hurricane Jeanne has left the east coast, and is traveling up the state. C's brother lives in Winter Haven, and we have yet to hear from him. Orlando is now under siege. Lake Wales looks like they got their tarps ripped off, and what bldgs were standing, are no longer standing. But that's just what the media is saying...We're all waiting for the sun to come up to assess damage. But as far as Hollywood Beach, they didn't need to evacuate the beach. We were safer here than those inland where the tornado's spawn. But I will say this... The "clean" side of the storm is so much better to ride than the "dirty" side. As soon as it's a decent hour, we're going to call up to Vero, and then Winter Haven to see how our friends and family faired.I'm sitting here drinking coffee out of the thermo's.. and the popcorn was wonderful to the system! 7:51am: I have just come from walking on the beach taking inventory. the roots from the coconut palms are exposed near the shoreline. Lots of dead blow fish on the Broadwalk. I found one dead pelican, and lots of finger coral. Saw lufah sponges on the Broadwalk. But no damage. Broadwalk was not covered in sand, like it was during Frances. We came out of this pretty unscathed. We're going to walk further, we saw on TV that farther south on the Broadwalk, it's underwater. We've also heard that Winter Haven is getting it now. We're ok here.8:12am: We've just heard from our friends in Vero Beach. Their house on the Barrier Island faired well. One tile came off their roof. But Randy has pulled his boat off the trailer, and is going up and down the roads in his boat! They have at least 3 feet of water in the roads.Weather reports are showing the eye of the storm is over Sebring and traveling northwest. It looks like C's brother is going to get it, yet again. This will be the 3rd time that an eye of a hurricane has hit Winter Haven. First Charley, then Frances, and now Jeanne. We're waiting to hear from her brother to make sure their wood frame home makes it through.
